IT.SCHEISS AT KLIA

WHILST it took several hundreds of violent black clad "pro-democracy" rioters who occupied Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok Airport to disrupt flights and passenger movement,  closer to home a problem with the Internet connection and flight check-in systems at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) main terminal and KLIA2 low-cost carrier terminal since the night of 21st August 2019 has affected several airport systems such as the WiFi connection, flight information display, check-in counters and baggage handling systems, as well as the delay of 20 flights and rendered the MYairpors mobile application inoperable.

As of  16:28 hours or 2.28 pm on 22 August 2019, there's no news as to whether the source and location of the Internet break down - whether within the airport's internal local area network or in the external Internet connection -  has been identified. 

Around 2.30 pm on 22 August 2019, The Malay Mail reported.


 Airport operator says 20 flights delayed at KLIA, mobile app down

 KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 ― As many as 20 flights scheduled to depart from the main Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) were delayed this morning due to a massive disruption of its systems, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said today.

 The country’s main airport operator announced the delay for 20 flights from six airlines including Malaysia Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Malindo Airways that affected domestic and international travel.


The 20 flights delayed include flights bound for Narita, Japan; Guang Zhou, China; Yangon, Myanmar; Perth, Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; Denpasar and Jakarta, Indonesia; London, United Kingdom; Chennai, India; Dacca, Bangladesh; Koh Samui, Thailand; Heathrow, London; Dubai and Hong Kong.

 The full list of flight destinations is available on Malaysia Airports Twitter and Facebook pages.
MAHB also announced that its MYairports mobile application is currently unserviceable as a result of the temporary systems disruption at both terminals of the airport.
It advised travellers to approach airport staff for further information or assistance if needed.
MAHB had earlier advised travellers flying out of KLIA to be at their respective terminals at least four hours ahead of departure to avoid missing their flights.

 Despite disruption MAHB said it teams working round the clock to rectify the problem and minimise the inconvenience to passengers.

 Passengers are also advised to contact the company’s Airport CARE Ambassadors or call 03-8776 2000 if they require more information regarding flight details.

 KLIA's internet connection and flight check-in systems have been disrupted at both terminals which started last night and is affecting several airport systems such as the WiFi connection, flight information display, check-in counters and baggage handling systems.
The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

 Then at around 3.30 pm on 22 August 2019, The Malay Mail reported but no news about identification of the source and location of the problem, except that they managed to get the Flight Information Display System up and running.

 KUALA LUMPUR, August 22 — Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) it is in the midst of stabilising the critical passenger-facing systems at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The airport operator has deployed 500 staff to assist passengers on the ground while systems are being stabilised.
"All the critical passenger-facing systems at the KLIA second terminal and klia2, including the Flight Information Display Systems (FIDS), are fully functioning.

 "Passengers are also encouraged to check-in via the respective airlines' mobile app or website," said MAHB in a statement today.
MAHB also said relevant stakeholders such as the Civil Aviation Authority Malaysia (CAAM) and the representatives of airlines operating at KLIA, including the Airline Operators Committee (AOC) chairman have been briefed on the latest progress, updates and mitigation plans.
KLIA's internet connection and flight check-in systems have been disrupted at both terminals since last night and are affecting several airport systems such as WiFi connection, flight information display, check-in counters and baggage handling systems.

 The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

 KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The massive outage to systems at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has also affected all retail and food and beverage stores in the main terminal, cutting off credit card transactions for now.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has advised all visitors in the main terminal to use cash instead.
“Please look out for ATMs or the Bureau De Change should you need to use the ringgit, our local currency.

 “The KLIA2 terminal is not affected by this,” MAHB said in an update on the current airport systems disruption this afternoon.
The cash-only payment is the latest problem at Malaysia’s main gateway following massive disruptions to its systems that have affected WiFi connection, check-in counters, baggage handling systems and MYairports mobile application.
The flight information display systems (FIDS) have been restored.

 Earlier, it was reported that Internet connection and flight check-in systems have been disrupted at both KLIA terminals.

 Travellers departing the country today have been advised to be at their respective terminals at least four hours ahead of departure to avoid missing their flights.

 Despite disruption MAHB said its teams are on the ground working to rectify the problem and minimise the inconvenience to passengers.

 So even the credit and debit card payment terminals cannot work - what a disruption, though the ATMs are still working.

 I write quite a bit about an upcoming evolution of industrial automation - i.e. Industry 4.0, the foundation of which comprises up to nine technologies - or the "Nine Pillars" - i.e., Big Data, Augmented Reality, Simulation, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Systems Integration, Additive Manufacturing and Autonomous Systems.

 For Industry 4.0 to realise its full potential, it will require the extensive availability of high-speed, reliable broadband Internet connectivity, including fibre the upcoming 5th Generation cellular bearer wireless connectivity known as "5G".

 The latest news, roughly before 5pm on 22 August 2019 The Malay Mail reported that credit card payment facilities had been restored but no news yet about the source and location of the Internet breakdown.

 KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The credit card system for the retail and food and beverage outlets at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has been restored, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said today.

 Travellers were earlier advised to use cash following a system disruption at both KLIA terminals.
Other airport functions that were affected included the internet connection, flight check-in, baggage handling, flight information display systems (FIDS) and MYairports mobile application.
The FIDS has since been restored as well.
In a string of updates on the airport operator’s social media channels, MAHB said it has deployed 500 staff on the ground to assist travellers while the systems are being stabilised.
Travellers have been advised to be at their respective terminals at least four hours ahead of departure to avoid missing their flights.

 “Passengers can approach airport staff should they require any information or assistance,” MAHB said in an update on social media.
The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

 However, the above problem with the Internet connectivity at KLIA and KLIA2  is a stark reminder of the consequences of our over reliance on information and communication technology (ICT) based systems and the potential for paralysis and dysfunctionality of infrastructure and services in event the system breaks down. Fortunately, people at KLIA and KLIA 2 could still use cash.

 I wonder HOW we will function under such situations if we all no longer use cash but instead are all using some kind of cryptocurrency or digital currency.
