BY SOO WERN JUNKUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 ― As many as 20 flights scheduled to depart from the main Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) were delayed this morning due to a massive disruption of its systems, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said today.
The country’s main airport operator announced the delay for 20 flights from six airlines including Malaysia Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Malindo Airways that affected domestic and international travel.

MAHB had earlier advised travellers flying out of KLIA to be at their respective terminals at least four hours ahead of departure to avoid missing their flights.
Despite disruption MAHB said it teams working round the clock to rectify the problem and minimise the inconvenience to passengers.
Passengers are also advised to contact the company’s Airport CARE Ambassadors or call 03-8776 2000 if they require more information regarding flight details.
KLIA's internet connection and flight check-in systems have been disrupted at both terminals which started last night and is affecting several airport systems such as the WiFi connection, flight information display, check-in counters and baggage handling systems.

The airport operator has deployed 500 staff to assist passengers on the ground while systems are being stabilised.
"Passengers are also encouraged to check-in via the respective airlines' mobile app or website," said MAHB in a statement today.
The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

BYSOO WERN JUNKUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The massive outage to systems at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has also affected all retail and food and beverage stores in the main terminal, cutting off credit card transactions for now.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has advised all visitors in the main terminal to use cash instead.
“The KLIA2 terminal is not affected by this,” MAHB said in an update on the current airport systems disruption this afternoon.
Earlier, it was reported that Internet connection and flight check-in systems have been disrupted at both KLIA terminals.

So even the credit and debit card payment terminals cannot work - what a disruption, though the ATMs are still working.

KLIA system disruption continues, but credit card service restored

BY SOO WERN JUNKUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The credit card system for the retail and food and beverage outlets at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has been restored, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said today.
Travellers were earlier advised to use cash following a system disruption at both KLIA terminals.
The FIDS has since been restored as well.
“Passengers can approach airport staff should they require any information or assistance,” MAHB said in an update on social media.
The disruption is expected to continue throughout the day.

However, the above problem with the Internet connectivity at KLIA and KLIA2 is a stark reminder of the consequences of our over reliance on information and communication technology (ICT) based systems and the potential for paralysis and dysfunctionality of infrastructure and services in event the system breaks down. Fortunately, people at KLIA and KLIA 2 could still use cash.
I wonder HOW we will function under such situations if we all no longer use cash but instead are all using some kind of cryptocurrency or digital currency.
