WHILST BITCOIN LINGERS GOING SIDEWAYS, CRYPTO KIRBY SEES A LIKELIHOOD OF OPPORTUNITY IN BITCOIN, OR PERHAPS A FURTHER PLUNGE

Firstly, I do not trade Bitcoin or any cryptocurrencies and this is not a recommendation that any of you do and neither is this investment advice.

Bitcoin's price vs the U.S. dollar has been down and going sideways just above U.S.$6,000 to the U.S. dollar since June 2018, having dropped from an all time high of almost U.S.$20,000 in December 2017.

Bitcoin was originally conceived as an independent, alternative digital currency operating in a parallel universe to 'establishment' currencies such as the U.S. dollar, the Malaysian ringgit and so forth, thus enabling us to buy and sell goods and services domestically and cross-border bypassing 'establishment' financial regulations and the 'establishment' banking system.

Whilst I have no issue with the use of alternative currency and payment systems, even if it's barter trade, use of pebbles or marbles as currency, however once Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were made exchangeable with 'establishment' currencies, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have become just another 'establishment' asset class in the global finance capitalist system which are traded on exchanges by speculators and professional traders looking of opportunity to make quick money from a rise in Bitcoin's or other cryptocurrenies' rise.

I also find most of the narrative about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies do not mention blockchain - a technology initially described in 1991 by Stuart Haber and W. Scott Stornetta and later developed by 'Satoshi Nakamoto' (whoever he is or they are) for use by Bitcoin for distributed, encrypted record keeping, is a technology of interest in of itself.

I suppose that with opportunity, profits and financial greed uppermost in their mind, most of those who talk about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies today either couldn't care less or don't have the brains to comprehend blockchain technologies, even at the most basic level.

Anyway, in his latest post on Bitcoin, full-time trader Crypto Kirby describes why he believes that the price of Bitcoin could likely rise in the near future but at same time it could likely also drop further.

"When Will Next Bitcoin (BTC) Bull Run Start?- Crypto Market Technical Analysis & Cryptocurrency News"

At the same time, whilst he hopes to profit from a rise in Bitcoin's price, however he does not expect it to reach astronomical heights such as US$1 million as the 'moonboys', which Kirby calls them, have predicted.

Once again, this is not speculation or investment advice but for informative purposes only.

My only interest in Crypto Kirby's videos is that they help me better understand stock price technical indicators and analysis.

For me, the exuberance, hype, hoo-hah, bullshit and ballyhoo over Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is just a load of the usual IT scheiss (IT shit or IT bullshit) which has come from the mouths of Cyber-utopians all these years.

I coined the term "Cyber-utopians" to refer to techno-determinists who believe that developments in technological developments and facilities will empower and enable and empower the small, the weak, the oppressed and the underdogs to challenge and overthrow the powerful, including governments and large corporations dominating the landscape.

Let's start with the claim that the invention of the printing press increased literacy and diffusion of information and knowledge amongst the masses and enabled them to challenge the feudal order of their day.

One thing which could be said about the printing press is that it enabled the publication and diffusion of Bibles in the native languages of of various people, especially in Europe, thus undermining the hold which the Roman Catholic priesthood, who were schooled in Latin, had over the interpretation of the Bible and dissemination of its message to their flock; and the publication of Bibles in native languages of the peoples of Europe is believed to have enabled and aided the Protestant Reformation and its break with the Church of Rome.

No offence intended to Roman Catholics, Protestants or Orthodox Christians but whilst at first, the Roman Catholic church opposed the publication of Bibles in languages other than Latin, it soon after embraced this move and instead of being overwhelmed and shunted aside by the Protestant movement - with over one billion adherents worldwide, Roman Catholicism remains the overwhelmingly dominant Christian denomination by far today, dwarfing any of the estimated over 30,000 different Protestant denominations, thanks perhaps to their slightly different respective interpretations of the Bible enabled by the printing press, thus fragmentation, especially within Protestant Christianity.

Moving on, it's said that the French serfs at the time of the French Revolution were quite literate compared to their counterparts in other European countries, so the printing press could have helped enable the French Revolution and France's bourgeoisie (middle class) to overthrow the feudal ruling class - i.e. the nobility and establish the French Republic but fast forward to today, and those middle class revolutionaries have now become a monopoly capitalist class dominating France's economy and politics, with France's proletarians (working class) opposed to them fighting them for better wages, working conditions and against the austerity measures being imposed upon them by bourgeois governments.

On  8th February 1996, a time when mass availability of Internet access had begun to take off, John Perry Barlow issued a statement - "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" whilst hobnobbing with the global 'establishment's' top leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace
by John Perry Barlow

Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.

We have no elected government, nor are we likely to have one, so I address you with no greater authority than that with which liberty itself always speaks. I declare the global social space we are building to be naturally independent of the tyrannies you seek to impose on us. You have no moral right to rule us nor do you possess any methods of enforcement we have true reason to fear.

Governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. You have neither solicited nor received ours. We did not invite you. You do not know us, nor do you know our world. Cyberspace does not lie within your borders. Do not think that you can build it, as though it were a public construction project. You cannot. It is an act of nature and it grows itself through our collective actions.

You have not engaged in our great and gathering conversation, nor did you create the wealth of our marketplaces. You do not know our culture, our ethics, or the unwritten codes that already provide our society more order than could be obtained by any of your impositions.

You claim there are problems among us that you need to solve. You use this claim as an excuse to invade our precincts. Many of these problems don't exist. Where there are real conflicts, where there are wrongs, we will identify them and address them by our means. We are forming our own Social Contract. This governance will arise according to the conditions of our world, not yours. Our world is different.

Cyberspace consists of transactions, relationships, and thought itself, arrayed like a standing wave in the web of our communications. Ours is a world that is both everywhere and nowhere, but it is not where bodies live.

We are creating a world that all may enter without privilege or prejudice accorded by race, economic power, military force, or station of birth.

We are creating a world where anyone, anywhere may express his or her beliefs, no matter how singular, without fear of being coerced into silence or conformity.

Your legal concepts of property, expression, identity, movement, and context do not apply to us. They are all based on matter, and there is no matter here.

Our identities have no bodies, so, unlike you, we cannot obtain order by physical coercion. We believe that from ethics, enlightened self-interest, and the commonweal, our governance will emerge. Our identities may be distributed across many of your jurisdictions. The only law that all our constituent cultures would generally recognize is the Golden Rule. We hope we will be able to build our particular solutions on that basis. But we cannot accept the solutions you are attempting to impose.

In the United States, you have today created a law, the Telecommunications Reform Act, which repudiates your own Constitution and insults the dreams of Jefferson, Washington, Mill, Madison, DeToqueville, and Brandeis. These dreams must now be born anew in us.

You are terrified of your own children, since they are natives in a world where you will always be immigrants. Because you fear them, you entrust your bureaucracies with the parental responsibilities you are too cowardly to confront yourselves. In our world, all the sentiments and expressions of humanity, from the debasing to the angelic, are parts of a seamless whole, the global conversation of bits. We cannot separate the air that chokes from the air upon which wings beat.

In China, Germany, France, Russia, Singapore, Italy and the United States, you are trying to ward off the virus of liberty by erecting guard posts at the frontiers of Cyberspace. These may keep out the contagion for a small time, but they will not work in a world that will soon be blanketed in bit-bearing media.

Your increasingly obsolete information industries would perpetuate themselves by proposing laws, in America and elsewhere, that claim to own speech itself throughout the world. These laws would declare ideas to be another industrial product, no more noble than pig iron. In our world, whatever the human mind may create can be reproduced and distributed infinitely at no cost. The global conveyance of thought no longer requires your factories to accomplish.

These increasingly hostile and colonial measures place us in the same position as those previous lovers of freedom and self-determination who had to reject the authorities of distant, uninformed powers. We must declare our virtual selves immune to your sovereignty, even as we continue to consent to your rule over our bodies. We will spread ourselves across the Planet so that no one can arrest our thoughts.

We will create a civilization of the Mind in Cyberspace. May it be more humane and fair than the world your governments have made before.

Davos, Switzerland
February 8, 1996

I'm pretty sure that after reading Barlow's Cyber-utopian statement over 22 years later. many of you might be laughing at how far Barlow's idealistic vision has turned out in reality today.

Cyber-utopians during the early days of mass availability of the Internet back in the mid to late 1990s, claimed that the World Wide Web would enable small business startps in college dormitory rooms, bedrooms or garages to compete on a level playing field with and challenge to power of giant corporations but as it has turned out today, after the massive dotcom shakeout of 2000 (a.k.a. the 'dotcom bust'), in which many dotcoms fell by the wayside, a handful of dotcoms which survived have metamorphosised into giant Internet corporations dominating Cyberspace worldwide today, leaving small, cute and cuddly startups with little chance of ever successfully challenging them.

As for the printing press 'liberating' mankind from tyranny, well we now often read many complaints about how 'establishment' mainstream media giants dominate the minds of most people and how a galaxy of individuals operating small online media outlets hosted on sites such as You Tube (owned by Internet giant Google), Facebook and so forth are challenging the 'dominance' of mainstream media and these 'alternative' media content creators are no complaining about how the Internet giants upon whose sites they are hosted on for free are denying creators of content deemed 'inappropriate' from earning their share of advertising revenue (demonetisation) and worse, even kicking them off their sites altogether, as a dog shakes off fleas.

Here are some examples:-

"Gab Gets Infowars'd by the Corporate Authoritarians, to Great Applause by Thoughtslaves"

" Youtube Warns Against Article 13 While Adopting Its Own Corporate Censorship"

"Youtube Shadowbans Sargon of Akkad Video, Also now Live-Deleting Live Chats"

"Walk Away Brandon Straka BLOCKED On Facebook For Posting InfoWars Link"

"YouTube is screwing us again"

If these guys expect to enjoy unfettered free speech forever, whilst being hosted for free on a giant Internet corporation's website, they are dreaming.

So much for the IT scheiss about the Internet 'liberating' small individuals from government or corporate 'tyranny', when these guys denounce You Tube on You Tube, hoping that You Tube will listen to them, whilst risking You Tube booting them off altogether and saving on its cost of providing them with the storage space to host their content for free and the Internet infrastructure capacity to stream their videos.

I leave you with an observation I've made - i.e. Major political upheavals, revolutions and political sea changes throughout history happened before there was mass availability of Internet access, smartphones and social media. These include the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the rise of Hitler, the rise of Mussolini, the successful anti-colonial struggles, the  militant anti-Vietnam War marches and demonstrations, the fall of Marcos and the ending of Apartheid in South Africa.

Today, with ample Internet and social media access, the anti-war movement, especially in Imperialist heartlands such as the United States and Europe is practically lame and hardly visible.

So much for techno-determinism.

"Arab Spring", I hear someone say as being enabled by social media!!!

Look at the reality on the ground in Tunisia and Egypt today to see what has the "Arab Spring" has achieved longterm.

Let me leave you with a thought about methods of political oppression.

One method is brutality and draconian measures against political opponents, protestors, marchers and so forth. This method, often used in authoritarian third world countries is abhorrent and attracts worldwide condemnation.

Another approach used especially in the 'advance', 'democratic', 'civilised' countries is to allow opposition forces and groups to peacefully protest, picket, demonstrate, say and write whatever they want but afterwards ignore them and carry on with business as usual.

In this second method, the government or related corporations literally farts in the protestors faces, and there is nothing in the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights against governments farting in the faces of the populace.

The method of oppression gives the populace the illusion of empowerment and freedom, whilst they remain oppressed.

Aldous Huxley somehow portrayed this approach in his novel Brave New World in this short video narrative:-

" Aldous Huxley and Brave New World: The Dark Side of Pleasure"

If you have the time, you may want to listed to an almost eight hour long audiobook of his book.

"Brave New World Aldous Huxley Audiobook"

Back in the 1960s, young people like myself back then were excited with the possibility that we could be travelling in outer space as we watched the Apollo 11 moon landing. However, NASA ended the Apollo moon programme in the mid-1970s and when mass Internet access came in the 1990s, people had to content themselves with travelling through Cyberspace and developed all this myths and illusions about it.

Yours truly

EXPLOSIVE FINDING! - 4G & WIFI JAMMER FOUND AT PKR KUALA SELANGOR ELECTION SITE

Now this is an explosive discovery which quite possibly is the cause of problems encountered with PKR's e-voting system.

On 28 October 2018, a 4G & WiFi jammer equipment was found on an upper terrace of the indoor stadium in Kuala Selangor where the PKR's elections was held.

Here is the full NST Online You Tube from which the above screen grab was made.

Also, Free Malaysia Today of 28 October 2018 carries a Bernama report:-

28 October 2018

NEVER MIND THE ALLEGATIONS - IT WAS JUST AN e-SCREWUP

Never mind the allegations of malpractices.

I'll be generous. It was just an e-Screwup which has opened a Pandora's Box of allegations for PKR.

"The PKR polls itself has been plagued with technical glitches, with the Kuala Selangor polls postponed today to another date to be fixed due to the failure of the e-voting system. This was blamed on an internet glitch."

PKR should have reverted to tried and tested paper ballot voting once there were problems with your e-voting system in Penang and Kedah.

Not everything 'e' is better. Remember that whilst the only constant is change, however always ask whether it will be change for the better or for the worse.

However, PKR persisted with e-voting in other states and now it ends up with these allegations, which can drag matters on and on unproductively for the party.

Free Malaysia Today article follows below:-

MORE ON PKR's e-VOTING FIASCO

Malaymail.com wrote:-

He said only the Kuala Kedah division experienced problems during the state-level elections yesterday when less than 20 people had taken their own barcodes but did not vote.

"I did check with the programmer, and there were people who took the barcode, but did not vote," he said.

He pointed out that problems related to the implementation of the e-voting system was due to human factor but not with the system.

This raises several  pertinent questions:-

Why did people take their 2D barcode and not vote from their phones?

Is it possible that they did not know how to do so?

Is it possible that they did not have a 2D barcode reading app installed on their phones?

If they knew how, did these people not have the cellular broadband package which would have allowed them to vote from their phones?

Were WiFi hotspots provided for such members with smartphones but no cellular broadband package to vote?

Whoever cooked up this e-voting system appears to have assumed that everybody is as tech-savvy as them.

Big gap in number of votes recorded in PKR polls

Published 20 hours ago on 27 October 2018

SUNGAI PETANI, Oct 27 — Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) central elections committee (JPP) has detected a trend where higher number of votes recorded for leadership selection at the division-level compared to the votes for the central executive council (MPP) members.

JPP secretary Ismail Yusop said the technical team was studying the trend that had been detected for the past two weeks.

"The voters are likely to vote for leaders in their respective divisions and as for the MPP they will only vote for important posts as not all of them know the top leadership," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

He said this when asked to comment on the claims made by Selangor PKR communications bureau chief Nor Hizwan Ahmad today that 30 per cent of the votes went missing from the e-voting system during the first phase of the Kedah PKR elections held at 10 divisions yesterday.

Nor Hizwan in a media statement issued today was quoted as saying despite the assurance given that the integrity of the voting process during the elections still intact, the fiasco was obvious and would definitely jeopardise the democratic process in PKR.

Ismail said Nor Hizwan's claims were inaccurate and he should have referred to the JPP first to find out the exact situation and not to blame the party's election system.

"For me the statement is incorrect, as if attacking the JPP credibility. We do admit there are problems, but we try to improve it continuously from time to time," he said.

"We can also detect any (possible) deliberate malicious attempts made by certain parties to disrupt the elections process," he said. — Bernama

MORE TROUBLE LOOMS FOR PKR THANKS TO ITS INSISTENCE ON e-VOTING

If PKR had listened to IT.Scheiss and had dropped its e-voting and reverted to tried and tested paper ballots, the party election results would not be in this mess now.

IT.Scheiss knows the limitations of IT-based systems beyond the ivory tower of IT geeks and nerds but PKR did not listen

Now especially PKR ministers are further distracted by continuing party election issues when we need then to focus on running the country.

Also, local authorities in Selangor state are introducing e-parking apps, when the present system of paper parking coupons is simplicity itself and also benefits retailers in the community who are agents of paper parking coupons. Do they think that everyone has a smartphone with a cellular data package and than all who do are IT-savvy enough to use such e-parking apps?

And, banks and financial institutions are forcing people to read their account statements online to save costs and supposedly "save the environment", when there still are many people who are not IT-savvy enough to do so, including many who know how to use WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other social media backwards.

I know quite a few people who know WhatsApp and Facebook backwards but cannot even write a proper letter using a word processor or check their e-mail, even if their life depends on it.

HEE, HEE, HEE, HEE ! - I SAID THERE WOULD BE ISSUES RAISED OVER PKR's GEE WHIZ e-VOTING SYSTEM, DIDN'T I ?

Now, now, now!

I wrote here twice earlier that PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) should have done away with its e-voting system and revert to tried and trusted paper ballot voting in the party's deputy president elections after the fiasco in Penang and Kedah but the party insisted in proceeding with e-voting in other states and now Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, PKR Member of Parliament for Gombak and Malaysian Minister of Economic Affairs, who is one of the contenders for PKR deputy president highlights problems with the e-voting system and demands that the party conduct an investigation into the problems.

If PKR had listened to IT.Scheiss, it would not be facing questions raised about the integrity of its election process and the validity of the result, especially by contenders such as Azmin and others.

BITCOIN, OTHER CRYPTOCURRENCIES, THE US AND CHINA STOCK MARKETS ARE HEADING FOR THE SHITTER

"Stock Market is Dictating Bitcoin (BTC)?! - Crypto Market Technical Analysis & Cryptocurrency News"

'Crypto Kirby' is a professional technical stock price movement analyst and an astute Bitcoin trader who shuns the cyber-utopian euphoria, hype, hoohah, bullshit and ballyhoo over Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies (a.k.a. 'altcoins'). He relies exclusively on the technical indicators for his trading decisions.

DISCLAIMER: This is not advice to trade Bitcoin but just for educational and informative purposes only. Unlike mathematics which can be used to determine exact outcomes, technical stock price analysis is an in-exact science (or a combination of art and science) which can be used only to predict the likelihood of future outcomes but never its certainty.

I do not trade Bitcoin or any cryptocurrencies but find Crypto Kirby's daily videos informative for my own better understanding stock market technical indicators and how they can be used to predict LIKELY future price movements and it is obvious that there is much pump and dump going on with Bitcoin from the price spikes in Bitcoin and the corresponding spike in volume, followed by Bitcoin's price coasting along sideways with little volume before it either plunges or shoots up with large spikes in volume.

SENIOR CITIZEN MEMBERS HAVE PROBLEMS USING e-VOTING SYSTEM IN PKR'S FEDERAL TERRITORY PARTY ELECTIONS

Now, now! Didn't I say that PKR should revert from electronic-voting (e-voting) back to conventional paper ballot voting in the party's vice-presidential elections following the e-voting fiasco in Penang and Kedah.

Whenever I file my income tax return each February, I have the choice to request the Inland Revenue Department send me a paper form for me to fill in and return to them, download a PDF softcopy of the relevant paper form, print it out and fill it in and mail it to Inland Revenue, or to fill in the form online and e-file it. It is the same with filing quarterly GST returns with the Customs Department. (Businesses still need to submit their quarterly GST returns with GST at 0%)

However, here PKR more or less tells its members - "Too bad if you are not IT-savvy enough to vote using our gee whiz smartphone-based e-voting system." or something to that effect.

A Bernama report about problems with e-voting for non-IT savvy voters follows below:-

Help non-IT savvy members vote, PKR election committee urged
Bernama - October 7, 2018 11:40 PM

KUALA LUMPUR: The lack of a special queue for senior citizens and issues faced by non-IT savvy members led to a commotion in several divisions during the PKR polls in the Federal Territories today.

A check at the Lembah Pantai and Wangsa Maju divisions found that the entrances to the voting halls were crowded and members, including senior citizens, had to queue for up to an hour before being able to vote.

Some candidates have suggested that the Central Election Committee (JPP) allocate a special queue for senior citizens and deploy assistants to help voters who are not familiar with the electronic voting system.

PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said he had reported the matter to the JPP secretariat for consideration.

"I saw this problem happening in this division where senior citizens had to wait a long time to get their turn to vote, and this will definitely be happening in other divisions throughout the country," he said at the polling centre for the Lembah Pantai division at the Eco-Park Community Centre here.

Fahmi, who is also Lembah Pantai division chief and a member of the Central Leadership Council (MPP) said, however, members of the division who faced difficulty in voting as they were not IT-savvy were allowed to bring along an escort to assist them after the matter was agreed upon by JPP officials at the centre.

About 6,000 PKR members are eligible to vote in the Lembah Pantai division, and about 30% of them are senior citizens.

Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul who is a vice-presidential candidate also endured a similar problem and said he was forced to double-up as a facilitator at the entrance of the hall when he went to campaign at the Wangsa Maju division.

"The JPP needs to consider letting those who are not IT-savvy to bring an escort to help them carry out their responsibility. Although supervisors are in charge of assisting these members, their numbers are limited, and voters have to wait a long time before they are assisted.

"This is also to avoid accusations that JPP volunteers were voting on behalf of this group," he said.

The Wangsa Maju division has about 5,000 members who are eligible to vote.

It was a different matter altogether at the Setiawangsa polling centre where a commotion was said to have occurred when a brochure showing Johari's face was sabotaged by unknown parties who placed a sticker showing the number of another candidate, Dr Xavier Jayakumar, to confuse party members.

Setiawangsa branch youth chief candidate Khairul Khairi Ismail said the dirty tactic by irresponsible parties was detected early on, and an inspection was conducted as soon as the voters entered the polling centre.

"We were able to 'detect' it early on, when they were queueing, we checked that many people who got the flyers had the sticker so we told them to open (the brochures). Those who tried to cause this provocation have been expelled," he said.

The PKR leadership election process in the Federal Territories which began today involved 34,892 members from 13 party branches.

Voting should be accessible to all eligible persons – i.e. party members in this case and if some could not vote due to some barrier, such as being not savvy enough to operate the means of voting, such as e-voting in this case, it could lead to questions later as to the validity of the results.

Already, Zuraida Kamaruddin, one of PKR's vice-presidential contestants alleges that fellow contestant Rafizi Ramli's win in the Pahang PKR elections is "suspect" but her team will hold their fire until after the official results of the overall victor are announced in November, as Free Malaysia Today reports:-

KUALA LUMPUR: Zuraida Kamaruddin's team today claimed that PKR deputy presidential candidate Rafizi Ramli's win in Pahang was suspect, but said they would remain "gentlemen" until official results are announced next month.

"Even though we know there are matters we are suspicious of, we are 'gentlemen' about it," she told reporters after inspecting the voting process at Sentul PKR today.

Zuraida is contesting a vice-presidency post, and her team is engaged in a fierce competition with Rafizi's camp for the party's top positions. Rafizi is trying to unseat incumbent deputy president Mohamad Azmin Ali.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2018/10/07/rafizis-win-in-pahang-is-suspect-says-zuraida/

Besides whatever issue or issues Zuraida's team may alleged is "suspect' with Rafizi's win in Pahang, add issues raised over the validity of e-voting results due to non-IT savvy members having difficulty voting and PKR will likely face a real soup or problems to deal with afterwards.
PKR's vice-presidential elections span over a month into November 2018, distracting especially PKR members of parliament and state assemblymen and assemblywoman who are contesting from performing their duties as elected representatives to the country and their state, and any further complications and challenges over the election results will drag matters on further, perhaps will into 2019.

Whilst I am a senior citizen, I have been installing and maintaining computers since before many of today's smartphone and tablet savvy wallahs were born, though I also realise the problems many of my fellow senior citizens and even younger adults, including millennials have with using computers, smartphones and tablets, apart from being expert at using social media for frivolous, time-wasting purposes.

Enough of this IT scheiss, PKR!

e-VOTING SYSTEM SCREW UP RESULTS IN FIGHT BETWEEN PKR MEMBERS

The run up to the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) party elections has been a long drawn out affair, with Minister of Economic Affairs, Azmin Ali vying with Rafizi Ramli for the Vice-President post.

To make matters worse, the whole party election process across Malaysia spans over a month, with elections conducted in different states from 23 September to 28 October 2018, using a newly developed electronic voting (e-voting) system whereby voters click on their selected candidate's name on a tablet to register their vote.

All this, whilst Azmin has much work to do on Malaysia's economy, whilst other PKR members of parliament, state assemblymen and assemblywomen need to focus on governing the country and their respective states.

Free Malaysia Today quoted PKR election committee chairman Rashid Din as saying that voting had to be conducted state by state due to PKR's limited funds.

Sheesh!  PKR has 800,000 members nationwide who are eligible to vote and with a gee whiz e-voting system it takes them over one month to complete the voting process, when with 15 million eligible voters in Malaysia's 14 the general elections on 9th May 2018, who voted manually the 'archaic' way between 8am and 5pm, by putting an 'X' on a ballot paper and dropped it into an 'archaic' ballot box, with the votes counted the 'archaic' way by human beings and most of the results in and most winners declared by the following morning.

Besides that, in the video below, a man wearing a PKR shirt speaking in Malay, demands that the party revert to a manual  ('archaic') voting method using ballot papers, since an elderly member had problems using this gee-whiz e-voting system.

Obviously, whoever came up with the hare-brained idea to use an e-voting system did not consider the needs of party members who may not be as gadget-savvy as them.

NEWSPAPER EMPLOYMENT IN U.S. DROPS 45% (BY 32,000) IN 10 YEARS, WHILST 6,000 JOB INCREASE IN DIGITAL SEGMENT CANNOT MAKE UP

Oh! What a revealing piece of news from Finance Twitter.

Newspaper employment in the U.S. has dropped by 45% (or 32,000) from 2008 to 2017, total U.S. newsroom employment (including reporters, editors, photographers and videographers) dropped from 114,000 to 88,000 (or by 26,000) over that period, whilst employment in the digital media segment increased by a mere 6,000 (from 7,000 to 13,000) over that period.

Now what do those new media CON-sultants, often self-styled, who were touting new media (digital media on websites, blogs, digital editions such as e-paper, on tablets and smartphones) as the "future of media" have to say now, when the future of journalism as a viable, paying career which journalists can rely upon for a living is clearly in doubt?

I started my blog IT.Scheiss http://itsheiss.blogspot.com/ in 2012 to debunk the claims made by such new media CON-sultants.

This trend looks like it's inevitable, unless there is a swing back to printed newspapers and magazines some time in the distant future or if advertising revenue on digital media somehow catches up enough, but until then, school leavers contemplating a viable career in journalism should seriously reconsider their choice of a future career, since they could be out of work in their 40s, saddled with expenses of having to raise children, having to pay off their study loan, their car loan and possibly their housing loan, and have to drive taxis, clean toilets or serve coffee for a meagre living.

Without further ado, the Finance Twitter article of 31 July 2018 follows below, highlighted in blue:-

The Job Or Career You Should Avoid  - Newsroom Employment Drops 45% In About 10 Years

If your kids tell you that they wanted to work for a newspaper company, you should start worrying. The past decade has been a painful period for employees in U.S. newsroom, especially those working for newspaper. The only area that has experienced some growth in employment is digital-native news sector.

According to a Pew Research Center analysis of Bureau of Labour Statistics Occupational Employment Statistics survey data, the number of U.S. newsroom employees fell from approximately 114,000 in 2008 to 88,000 by 2017 – a drop of 23%. Those employees included reporters, editors, photographers and videographers.

Job losses at newspapers newsroom were the worst, having dropped 45% – from about 71,000 workers in 2008 to 39,000 in 2017. The newsroom employment involved 5 industries that produce news – newspaper, radio, broadcast television, cable and "other information services" (digital-native news publishers).

Unlike their counterparts working for newspaper companies, the number of digital-native newsroom employees increased by 79% – from about 7,400 workers in 2008 to about 13,000 in 2017. Unfortunately, the increase of about 6,000 total jobs in digital segment was not sufficient to offset the loss of about 32,000 newspaper jobs during the same period.

Employment in broadcast television was relatively stable, remaining at about 28,000 between 2008 and 2017. Jobs in cable television were also stable, at about 3,000 over the same period. Radio broadcasting, on the other hand, lost about 27% of its newsroom employees, dropping from about 4,600 workers in 2008 to about 3,300 in 2017.

Essentially, the newsroom employment saw how 6 in 10 (62%) of all news employees working for newspapers in 2008 would end up with less than 45% by 2017. On the contrary, the proportion for digital-native news employees increased, approximately doubling over the period, from 6% of all newsroom employees in 2008 to 15% in 2017.

U.S. newspapers have been hit by waves of layoffs over the past decade amid steep falls in circulation and advertising. Last week alone, the New York Daily News, the century-old tabloid known for its provocative headlines, announced it was slashing half its editorial staff. The move came little over a year after Tronc, the parent company of the Chicago Tribune, bought the tabloid for US$1.

Likewise, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. had also slimmed down its newspaper empire when BH Media Group reduced its staff by 148 employees and not filling 101 vacant positions back in Feb 2018. Buffett's hometown newspaper, the Omaha World-Herald, eliminated 43 positions while the Press of Atlantic City cut 16 jobs.

In reality, newspapers have been dying in slow motion for two decades now. In the U.S., weekday print circulation has shrunk from a high of nearly 60 million in 1994 to 35 million for combined print and digital circulation today – 24 years of decline. Advertising revenue has gone south, falling from US$65 billion in 2000 to less than US$19 billion in 2016.

The Washington Post and The New York Times are two most successful U.S. newspapers at earning revenue through digital subscription model. Yet, even both mainstream media struggle as digital subscription and advertising revenue has not made up for the collapse of print advertising industry-wide. American newspapers, however, didn't suffer alone.

Canadian newspapers have lost three-quarters of a billion dollars per year of reliable classified advertising revenue to eBay and Craigslist. Britain has nearly 200 fewer regional and local newspapers now than in 2005. In fact, things have gotten so bad that British Prime Minister Theresa May has warned that the closure of newspaper after newspaper is a "danger to democracy."

ARE WE HEADING FOR A MASSIVE SHAKE OUT OF SOCIAL MEDIA GIANTS ?

After the torrent of hype, hoohah, bullshit and ballyhoo over the past 10 years or more over the "glorious future" and "great prospects" for Internet-based companies and especially social media companies, however recent reports by various media point to problems these Internet giants are beginning to face.

About two months ago, a Russia Today report on 23 May 2018 believes that the tech "unicorn" bubble has reached its peak and that analysts believe that 80% of them are likely to fail within two years. Coined in 2013, the term "unicorn" refers to privately-owned information technology startups valued at US$1 billion or more

I first heard the term "unicorn" mentioned a lot by heads of Malaysian startups at a conference and exhibition of computing and information technology companies from across the Asia-Pacific, organised by The National ICT Industry Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre in 2015.

At that time, these guys seemed to look towards Uber as a model of a successful startup and I heard no end of "Uber", "Uber", "Uber", "Uber" being mentioned by these speakers, so it looks like "unicorns" and "Uber" were the flavour of the day amongst them about three years ago.

Anyway, the recent Russia Today article below will tell you more about impending signs that this bubble is likely to burst.

Silicon Valley's biggest ever tech bubble about to burst — RT Business News

23 May 2018 at 10:32

The excessive speculation in internet-based companies is worse today than during the peak of the dot-com bubble at the turn of the millennium, warns Keith Wright, a professor at the Villanova School of Business.

"It's going to be all downhill from here," he wrote in an opinion piece for CNBC. "Massive losses are coming in venture capital-funded start-ups that are, in some cases, as much as 50 percent overvalued."

The peak in the tech unicorn bubble has already been reached, he said, referring to unicorns as defined by venture capitalist Aileen Lee. The term unicorn, which was created in 2013, refers to privately-held startups valued at over $1 billion.

According to a recent study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, unicorns on average are roughly 50 percent overvalued. The research examined 135 unicorns and found that nearly half of them should be more fairly valued at less than $1 billion.

Analysts say that while most unicorn companies are not producing billions of dollars in revenue, up to 80 percent of them are set to fail within two years. The highest-valued private technology company Uber, which has rapidly growing revenue, still remains highly unprofitable. The firm's revenue was $6.5 billion as of 2016 but still it registered a net loss of $2.8 billion.

"We are now officially in a tech bubble larger than March of 2000," said Wright.

Some 76 percent of the companies that went public in 2017 were unprofitable on a per-share basis in the year leading up to their initial offerings, data compiled by Jay Ritter, a professor at the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business, has shown. It's the largest number since the peak of the dot-com boom in 2000, when 81 percent of newly-public companies were unprofitable.

The number of IPOs filed in the United States has dropped to the lowest since 2012. Some 275 IPOs have been filed in 2014; the figure fell to 105 in 2016. There were just a few successes in the 2017 IPO market.

Several high-profile billion-dollar start-ups such as BuzzFeed missed their 2017 year-end revenue targets, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"If you intend to invest in a unicorn IPO anytime soon, think twice," Wright warned. "And if you haven't taken a close look at your 401(k) or IRA retirement plan investments, check to see what those mutual funds have been dabbling in."

More recently - well yesterday in fact, Tech Crunch reported that Facebook shares lost US$120 billion in market capitalising, following a poor second quarter earnings report and evidence of slowing growth in number of users.

This is not surprising, since exponential growth in number of users is a temporary phase for any social media and Internet company and at some point, growth will level off and perhaps even decline, as users either drop out, become increasingly inactive or move to newer sites.

This is similar to the lifespan of shopping malls and department stores in Malaysia since the 1970s and 1980s, where they have risen to the height of prominence and popularity, gradually faded into obscurity and even closed down - such as Ampang Park, Malaysia's first mall, which opened with a bang in 1973 and became "the place to be". then began its slow and steady decline, with clear signs of being rather run down, as newer and more modern malls drew away its customers, until it was finally closed down recently to make way for the MRT.

Facebook loses $120 billion in market cap after awful Q2 earnings

Josh Constine

26 July 2018

Facebook's share price fell more than 20 percent in after-hours trading today after the company announced its slowest-ever user growth rate and a scary warning that its revenue growth would rapidly decelerate. Before today's brutal Q2 earnings, Facebook's share price closed today at $217.50 — a record high — but fell to around $172 after the earnings call. That's a market cap drop of roughly $123 billion. In two hours, Facebook lost more value than most startups and even public companies are ever worth.

Here's the full story on Facebook's disastrous Q2 2018 earnings:

So why did Facebook's share price sink like a stone? There are five big reasons:

Slowest-ever user growth rate – Facebook's monthly user count grew just 1.54, compared to 3.14 last quarter. Daily active users grew even slower at 1.44 percent, compared to 3.42 percent last quarter. For reference, 2.18 percent was its previous slowest DAU growth rate back in Q4 2017. Suddenly hitting this wall could limit Facebook's total user count over the long-run, and its revenue with it. Facebook tried to distract from these facts by announcing a new "family of apps audience" metric of 2.5 billion people using at least one of its apps, which will hide the shift of users from Facebook to Instagram and WhatsApp.

User count shrank in Europe, flat in U.S. & Canada – Facebook saw its first-ever decline in monthly user count in Europe, from 377 million to 376 million. It got stuck at 241 million in the U.S. and Canada after similarly pausing at 239 million in Q4 2017. Those are Facebook's two most lucrative markets, with it earning $25.91 per user in North America and $8.76 in Europe. If those markets stall, even swift growth in the Rest of World region, where it earns just $1.91 per user, won't save it.

Decelerating revenue growth – Facebook's revenue grew a remarkable 42 percent year-over-year this quarter. But CFO David Wehner warned that metric would decelerate by high single-digit percentage per quarter over the coming quarters. Wehner said a combination of currency headwinds, new privacy controls and new experiences like Stories will contribute to the deceleration. This news is what caused Facebook's share price to drop from -7 percent to -20 percent.

Privacy and well-being – Q2 saw the debut of Europe's GDPR that forced Facebook to change its privacy policies and get users to agree to how it collects data about them. Wehner blamed GDPR for Facebook loss of users in Europe. That law and Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal led the company to have to improve its privacy controls. These could make it tougher for Facebook to target people with ads or show their content to more people.

Meanwhile, Facebook has continued to adopt the "Time Well Spent" philosophy, removing click-bait news and crappy viral videos that lead to passive internet content consumption that studies say is unhealthy. Instead, Facebook is pushing features like Watch Party, where users actively interact with each other. Those might not produce as much time on site and subsequent ad views, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the changes are "positive and we're going to continue in this direction."

The shift to Stories – Facebook estimates that by 2019, sharing via ephemeral vertical Stories slideshows will surpass sharing via feeds. The problem is that advertisers may be slower than users to make that shift. "Will this monetize at the same rate as News Feed? We honestly don't know," COO Sheryl Sandberg said. Stories ads might be full-screen and more immersive, but they don't show off links to online stores, nor are they as well-optimized from decades of banner ad experience by the industry.

Luckily, even though Snapchat invented the Stories format, Facebook has far more people using it each day, with 150 million Stories users on Facebook, 70 million on Messenger, 400 million on Instagram and 450 million on WhatsApp. If Facebook does manage to figure out Stories ads, it could dominate, but it could take years for its advertiser count and ad prices to rise to offset the shift away from feeds.

Oh! I love Styxhexenhammer666' description of Facebook's shares "going down the shitter".

How dangerous are tech giants that don't make profits (VIDEO) — RT Business News

28 Jul 2018 at 14:35

Tech giants like Tesla, Uber, or Spotify are making less and less profit at the moment and experts are worried about their impact on the world. Are we seeing a new economic bubble in the making? RT's Daniel Bushel finds out.

American tech corporations are often making headlines nationwide and internationally, although their own performance is far from perfect. They lose more and earn less, and experts warn of a potential "bubble" looming in the horizon.

Tesla, Elon Musk's flagship company, is worth more than Ford or GM, but produces only a small number of cars. Spotify, a music streaming service, as well as Uber, are losing billions of dollars every year.

"Definitely, there's a bubble, not just in tech stocks but in general stock market itself," Jack Rasmus, professor of political economy at St. Mary's College, told RT, warning that "there are signs of financial fragility" that endanger the world.

Suing people, companies and government over various issues, sometimes trivial issues to us Malaysians, however is big in the United States, which keeps lawyers laughing their way to the bank.

Well, Reuters of 28 July 2018 reports that in the wake of the company's poor second quarter performance, Facebook, its CEO Marc Zuckerberg and its Chief Financial Officer David Wehner face a class action suit over allegations that they had made "misleading statements about or failing to disclose slowing revenue growth, falling operating margins, and declines in active users".

Facebook is sued after stock plunge 'shocked' market

Jonathan Stempel

28 July 2018 at  4:43 AM

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook Inc (FB.O) and its chief executive Mark Zuckerberg were sued on Friday in what could be the first of many lawsuits over a disappointing earnings announcement by the social media company that wiped out about $120 billion of shareholder wealth.

The complaint filed by shareholder James Kacouris in Manhattan federal court accused Facebook, Zuckerberg and Chief Financial Officer David Wehner of making misleading statements about or failing to disclose slowing revenue growth, falling operating margins, and declines in active users.

Kacouris said the marketplace was "shocked" when "the truth" began to emerge on Wednesday from the Menlo Park, California-based company. He said the 19 percent plunge in Facebook shares the next day stemmed from federal securities law violations by the defendants.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status and unspecified damages. A Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment.

Shareholders often sue companies in the United States after unexpected stock price declines, especially if the loss of wealth is large.

Facebook has faced dozens of lawsuits over its handling of user data in a scandal also concerning the U.K. firm Cambridge Analytica. Many have been consolidated in the federal court in San Francisco.

Thursday's plunge also hit Zuckerberg's bottom line.

Zuckerberg had been tied with Warren Buffett as the world's fourth-richest person, but the Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) chairman's current $83 billion fortune tops Zuckerberg's $66 billion, Forbes magazine said.
FB.O

Buffett now ranks third among the world's billionaires, while Zuckerberg is sixth.

Facebook shares fell another 0.8 percent on Friday, closing at $174.89 on the Nasdaq.

The case is Kacouris v Facebook Inc et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 18-06765.

Besides Facebook, the price of Twitter shares dropped 20% following a decline in its number of monthly users over its second quarter 2018, ABC reported on 28 July 2018.

Twitter shares plunge 20 per cent after company reports decline in monthly users

Posted at Sat 28 Jul 2018, 11:08am

Twitter's market value plunged by $US6 billion after it reported a decline in its monthly users over the second quarter of 2018.

The company's stock dropped 20.5 per cent after it warned the number of users could fall further in coming months as it continued to crack down on hate, abuse and online trolls.

Twitter said it was putting the long-term stability of its platform above user growth by cracking down on abuse.

That leaves investors seemingly unable to value what the biggest companies in the sector — which rely on their potential user reach — are worth.

Now valued at $US26 billion, Twitter's drop came one day after Facebook lost 19 per cent of its value in a single day.

Facebook lost $US119 billion in value, but investors still value Facebook at $US503 billion.

Twitter's decline in audience from 336 million monthly users in the first quarter to 335 million in the second quarter overshadowed a strong monthly user growth of 3 per cent compared with the previous year.

Twitter's second-quarter net income also hit $US100.1 million, after a loss last year during the same period.

This is the company's third profit in a row and the third it has ever posted.

Despite Twitter suffering its second-worst loss since it went public in November 2013, the stock has still doubled in value over the last 12 months.

Long criticised for allowing bad behaviour to run rampant on its platform, Twitter is now attempting to rein in the worst offenders.

At the same time, it must convince people it is the go-to platform in social media, even though it is dwarfed right now by Facebook.

Facebook has more than 2.23 billion users, while its apps WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger each have over 1 billion users.

Twitter has reiterated its efforts "to invest in improving the health of the public conversation" on its platform, making the "long-term health" of its service a priority over short-term metrics such as user numbers.

As part of these efforts, Twitter said that as of May, its systems identified and challenged more than 9 million accounts per week that were potentially spam or automated, up from 6.4 million in December 2017.

A Washington Post report put the total number of suspended accounts in May and June at 70 million.

The Associated Press also found that Twitter suspended 56 million such accounts in the last quarter of 2017.

AP/ABC

And, Styxhexenhammer666 believes that the prices of stocks of social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter are overvalued and that we could soon see a bust soon.

"Twitter Stock Collapses 18% In a Day: Social Media Bubble Incoming?"

Let's face it. Just like professional athletes, boxers, fashion models and malls, the glory days of social media companies are generally short - like 10 or maybe 20 years, after which they gradually decline or fade away.

At least the popularity of those 24-hour eateries in Malaysia - even those that wash their dishes in the toilet bowl - remain popular with the public and profitable as ever with Malaysia's eating public.
